THE SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF RARE EARTHS IN URANIUM METAL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4272414
The impurities are retained on a cellulose column after elution of the whole of the uranium using an ether-nitric acid mixed solvent. The column is ashed and the residue taken into solution from which the rare earths are precipitated first with calcium oxalate and finally co-precipitated with ferric hydroxide. The mixed hydroxides are ashed and then examined spectrographically, using a Jarrell-Ash grating spectrograph. The densities of the spectrum lines due to the rare earths are visually compared with those of iron added as an internal standard and the concentration values either obtained from a table of line-pair equalities or evaluated by a two-line calibration method.
