Higher-order linearization scheme for the interfacial shear of RELAP5/MOD3.1 and velocity iterations

Journal Article · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society

In contrast to the TRAC codes in which the interfacial shear force term (which should in fact be computed implicitly) is linearized in terms of the phasic velocities at the old time step, in RELAP5, no such linearization is made. Recently, a linearization scheme identical to that of TRAC-BF1 was introduced in RELAP5, improving the numerical robustness of the code. Here, the author reports on the implementation of a higher-order linearization scheme in the code and couples it with velocity iterations in the solution of the momentum equations. The author shows that depending on the interfacial shear model used, the results of some transients depend on the degree of linearization.
