FISSION-FRAGMENT IMPACT TRAPPING BY ThO$sub 2$ SLURRY PARTICLES

Journal Article · · Nuclear Sci. and Eng.
OSTI ID:4266299
In a homogeneous reactor of the Th-U-O aqueousslurry type, a major problem is the removal of the fission products which tend to act as neutron poisons. Fragments which come to rest with a slurry particle may be qudte difficult to remove unless the slurry particles are completely dissolved. In order to judge the potential value of certain slurry purification methods, it is necessary to estimate the percentage of fission fragments that might become lodged with the slurry particles. Some simplifying approximations are made as to the ways in which a fragment can come to rest in a particle and three types of particles are considered, large, small, anmd intermediate. (W.D.M.)
