ESCAPE OF FISSION FRAGMENTS FROM SLURRY PARTICLES

Estimates are made, from other experimental data, of the ranges of flssion fragments in ThO/sub 2/, H/sub 2/O, and D/sub 2/O. Calculations are then naade, as a function of the diameter of spherical slurry particles, of the fraction of fission fragments escaping from the particles, the average value of the fraction of initial kinetic energy retained by the fission fragments after escape, the number that will strike a second slurry particle after escaping from the first, and the amount of radiolytic gas that will be produced by the fission fragments, assuming no recombination. Calculations are also made of the effect of various types of radioactive decay on the escape of selected heavy nuclei from the slurry particles. (auth)
