Since final shutdown of the oldest Japanese nuclear power plant is planned for March 1988, the decommissioning of nuclear power plants is becoming an important issue. In consideration of the future decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants, the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) decommissioning project was initiated in 1981 by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute under contract to the Science and Technology Agency. After a 5-year study on decommissioning technology, actual dismantling of the JPDR commenced in December 1986 as a demonstration of decommissioning technology. In the demonstration, all components were removed from the JPDR site using developed techniques. The JPDR decommissioning project was completed by the end of March 1996. Various data on the project were systematically collected and analyzed for the future decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants.
