Cooperative efforts between business and government in the voluntary standards process is essential for the United States in developing and marketing technologically advanced products and services. Standards play a crucial role in facilitating effective partnerships between business entities and government agencies for enhancing the U.S. global competitiveness. ANSI/ANS-8.20-1991, `Nuclear Criticality Safety Training,` was developed as a guide to ensure safe operations. The standard provides criteria for nuclear criticality safety training for personnel associated within operations outside of reactors where a potential exists for criticality accidents. The objective of the standard is to document the essential requirements and the basic characteristics of an effective nuclear criticality safety training program. During 1996, the standard has been reviewed for relevance and significance to the nuclear industry. This paper discusses the content, application, and reaffirmation of the standard.
