PRELIMINARY DAREX FLOWSHEET

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4254098

The preliminary Darex flowsheet for a Yankee fuel provides a flo-step process for the total dissolution of stainless steel clad uranium fuels in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids (aqua regia) andd the removal of exceds chloride from the dissolver solution by a batch polatiltion procedure. Four major pieces of equipment are indicateds a dissolver-evaporator, a down draft condensers a condensate receivers and a caustic scrubber. The first three pieces or equipment are exposed to aqua regia and must be constructed og a corrosion resistant material such as titanium. Metallic ls) as an activator to prevent passivation effects. Under these conditions, the dissolution of cladding proceeds smoothly. (auth)
