The chemical effects of an isomeric transition on bromate ions in solution were studied. Some indications were found of the formation of an instable "bromites" fragment produced in aqueous solution and which can be reduced to a lower valence by methanol and eventually oxidized to the bromate state by oxidants. The neutralization of the charge of the 18-min. Br/sup 80/ to lower valences can not lead to the formation of bromate, and the formation of the stable bond Br -O during the discharge of the "bromite" fragment appears theoretically improbable. The "bromite" fragments are not hydrated at high pH. The effects of an isomeric transition on the bromate ion are comparable to the effects of the (n, gamma ) reactions on the oxy anions. (tr-auth)
