DEVELOPMENT OF WROUGHT ALUMINUM-MAGNESIUM ALLOYS. Technical Paper No. 14
Data collected over a period of nearly three decades on wrought aluminum- -magnesium alloys, leading to the recent development of alloys 5454 and 5456, are presented. Alloy 5456 is the strongest nonheat-treatable alloy commercially available in this country for welded structures. Alloy 5454, the newest member of the family, was introduced for prolonged service at temperatures above those for which the higher magnesium alloys are recommended. A number of tables and chants have been prepared to show the effect of composition strain hardening, and aging at atmospheric and moderately elevated temperatures on the tensile propenties and resistance to corrosion of a variety of alloy compositions.
