The probability density P(b,c; DN) that the second differences of the measured coordinates of a track in an emulsion take on the values D/sub 0/,D/sub 1/,...,D/sub N/ is determined, if the scattering constant b and the constant c of spurious scattering possess definite values. Using the expression obtained for P(b,c; D/sup N/), the constants b and c can be determined from the measured values D/sup N/ with the aid of the maximum probability theorem. (auth)
