Uranium tetrafluoride is prepared from the oxide U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ by maintaining the oxide in particle form in fluidized suspension at elevated temperature in hydrogen to convert it to uranium dioxide. Uranaium tetrahalide is then produced by the interaction of a gaseous hydrogen halide and the uranium dioxide at elevated temperature maintained in fluidized suspension in the hydrogen halide.
