INACTIVATION OF SULFHYDRYL GROUPS OF TISSUE PROTEINS OF RATS EXPOSED TO RONTGEN RAYS

Journal Article · · Biokhimiya
OSTI ID:4242014

Irradiation elicited a reduction in the number of SH groups in the liver and spleen proteins of the irradiated animal. Inactivation of slowly reacting SH groups which appeared only during irradiation or shortly thereafter, and directly related to the action of thc ionizing rays, was prevented by protective doses of cysteine administered prior to irradiation. Inactivation of free SH groups of tissue proteins occurred not only during or shortly after irradiation but during several days following.
