METHOD OF PRODUCING ZIRCONIUM OXIDE FROM ZIRCONIUM TETRACHLORIDE
A method is described for producing ZrO/sub 2/ in solid form by reaction of ZrCl/sub 4/ with H/sub 2/O vapor or alcohol vapor at 220 to 240 deg C. Calcination of the hydrate thus formed at 1000 to 1100 deg C produces ZrO/sub 2/ of high bulk density. The ZrCl/sub 4/ can be treated with steam for 1 to 1.5 hr at 220 deg C then calcined at 1000 deg C for 2 to 3 hrs, or it can be treated with steam 1 hr at 220 deg C then raised to 500 or 550 deg for 0.5 hrs followed by calcination at 1000 deg C for 2 hrs. Alternatively, the ZrCl/sub 4/ can be treated with CH/sub 3/OH vapor for 5 hours at 280 deg C, then the reaction is completed with superheated steam in about 30 min. The reaction is done in a rotating vessel. (T.R.H.)
