PROCESS FOR THE PURIFICATION OF TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDE OR ZIRCONIUM TETRACHLORIDE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4015185

A process is described for separation of TiCl/sub 4/ or ZrCl/sub 4/ from V, Cr, Fe, and other metallic impurities. The impure gaseous tetrachloride is passed through a fluidized bed containing H/sub 2/S or a metal sulfide. At a temperature below the reaction temperature of TiCl/sub 4/ or ZrCl/sub 4/ with the sulfide (140 to 300 deg C for TiCl/sub 4/, 300 to 350 deg C for ZrCl/sub 4/) the V, Cr, Fe, and other impurities react to form solid products that remain in the bed. Sand is used as a bed when H/sub 2/S is employed. (T.F.H.)
