The Zeeman effect of the visible absorption spectrum was investigated at 201 deg K with high resolution. The line displacements observed can be completely described by a first approximation perturbation calculation with the pseudomonoclinic crystal field and the external magnetic field as perturbation of the Eu ions. From the Zeeman displacements, the phase of a complex matrix element of the crystal field was determined. The g factors of the excited terms / sup 5/D/sub 1/ and /sup 5/D/sub 1/ were determined as g = 1.46 plus or minus 0.035. The mosaic structure of the europium bromate was completely confirmed through the Zeeman effect. (tr-auth)
