STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN 20KhM-L STEEL IN CONTINUOUS THERMAL TREATMENT (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Fiz. Metal. i Metalloved.
OSTI ID:4239448
Mwtallographic, x-ray, and electron microscopic studies were made of 20 KhM-L steel (0.15% C, 0.5% Cr, 0.61% Mn, 0.55% Mo) after continuous thermal treatment in loaded and normal states. The mixture of three carbides with structure of Cr/sub 23/C/sub 6/, Mo/sub 2/C, and Fe/sub 2/Mo/sub 2/C was observed in the carbide precipitant after normalization and tempering at 650 to 680 deg C. Carbide coalescence takes place at 500 to 550 deg C during which carbide-free ferrite zones form at the perlite grain boundaries. The enrichment of the alpha phase by alloying elements due to molybdenum carbide solubility improves the thermal resistance of manufactured wares. (R.V.J.)
