THE BASAL METABOLISM AND THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE THYROID GLAND IN X IRRADIATION OF ANIMALS

The relationship between the morphology of the thyroid gland and the disturbances of the basal metabolism as a resutt of the action of ionizing radiation was studied. Investigations were carried out on white rats weighing 140 to 200 gms. The animals were subjected to single whole-body irradition by x rays with dose rate of 37.8 r/min). 6 rats received 500 r each, 4 rats, 800 r each and 11 rats, 1000 r each. Basal metabolism was determined in 14 control ras. It was established that the basal metabolism is always decreased after irradiation with large doses of x rays. Dystrophic and necrobiotic changes of various degrees are revealed in the thyroid gland which depend on the dose of irradiation. (auth)
