Hafnium and zirconium are precipitated by mandelic acid in a hydrochloric acid solution The mandelates are ignited and weighed as combined oxides. This method covers the determination of the total of the two metals in raw or purified hafnium oxides, hafnium sponge, and refined metal. The method is accurate to about plus or minus 0.3% relative.
