ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM METAL IN IGNITED URANIUM/ZIRCONIUM RESIDUES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4086414

The sample is treated with a solution of bromine in ethyl acetate in which zirconium metal is soluble. After filtration the filtrate is evaporated to dryness and the residue redissolved in acid. Zirconium in separated from uranium by precipitation with mandelic acid, and determined volumetrically in a sulphuric acid solution using standard E.D.T.A. and bismuth solutions. The method is applicable to samples containing 0.1 to 20% w/w zirconium metal in combination with uranlum metal or oxides. The determination of zirconium has shown a coefficient of variation of plus or minus 0.6% at the 40 mg Zr level. (auth)
