THE DETERMINATION OF URANIUM DIOXIDE IN URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4235029
In a previous report it was shownn that while uranium tetrafluoride is soluble in EDTA-boric acid solution, uranium dioxide is relatively insoluble, thus permitting the determination of uranium tetrafluoride in the presence of uranium dioxide. The same method has now been extended to determine uranium dioxide in uranlum tetrafiuoride at low levels. It was shown that a small proportion of uranium dioxide is soluble in the reagent and the solubility loss is slightly greater for unstabilized uranaium dioxide than for stabilized material. The uranium in solution is not quadrivalent. Mechanical grinding of the sample before analysis shows loss of uranium dioxide, and again this is somewhat more noticeable with unstabilized uranium dioxide. A comparison of the results obtained on a limited set of samples by a bromine trifluoride method and the present one shows the presence of oxygen containing compounds other than uranium dioxide, uranyl fluoride and moisture. Hence, the bromine trifluoride result cannot in all cases be used to calculate the uranium dioxide content of uranium tetrafluoride. (auth)
