Uranium metal cast in the high temperature gamma phase (l.OO0 deg C) has greater resistance to corrosion by oxidation than in any other phase. This is important when using ternary alloys of uranium as neutronreflecting in a fast neutron pile. Uranium metal becomes stabilized in the gamma phase when closely alloyed with minor amounts of columbium and zirconium in combination (2 to 8%).
