The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDE), through the Power Plant Assessment Program (PPRP), is undertaking a number of studies to evaluate the trends in tropospheric ozone in the southern portion of the Northeastern United States Ozone Transport Region (OTR). As an addition to the conventional photochemical grid modeling efforts (e.g., Urban Airshed Model) mandated in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA-90) for the preparation of State Implementation Plans (SIP), the PPRP has been exploring methods of studying the behavior of ozone, ozone precursors and meteorology during ozone episodes in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. A version of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)-sponsored Simplified Ozone Modeling System (SOMS) is implemented in this project to generate maximum ozone concentrations for rural monitoring sites in central and eastern Maryland. The SOMS approach is simplified in that it only requires input of background concentrations for nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, ozone and regional meteorology.
