The Simplified Ozone Modeling System (SOMS) was examined for its potential to generate data that could compliment the results from more complex air quality models and that may be useful for control strategies and to establish long-term trends. This paper describes the results from a 3-year (1987--1989) prediction of the diurnal maximum ozone concentration (DMOC) for a site in Baltimore, Maryland and from a comparison of the 3-year model prediction with observations. The results indicated that SOMS predicted the 3-year mean DMOC, the mean annual cycle for the DMOC, and the summer period interannual perturbation for the DMOC very successfully. The results have given a green light for the more comprehensive 15-year prediction of the DMOC using SOMS.
