Recent efforts to comply with the Clean Air Act required showing attainment of the ozone standard for a representative ozone episode. Often the attainment demonstration requires modeling with the Urban Airshed Model (UAM). The UAM is data intensive often requiring specialized intensive field studies to gather sufficient data for input into the model. When conducting these studies it is the goal to capture representative ozone episodes suitable for planning purposes. This paper discusses several techniques to decide if the episodes captured during the 1990 field study in the Sacramento area are representative for use in the non-attainment plan. The author will review three methods of determining representativeness. Two rely on climatological wind roses. One depends on morning resultant winds, which is recommended in the EPA guidance document. The other relies on afternoon resultant winds. The third is based on regional wind flow patterns. The following describes each method and how it relates to representativeness for the primary August 7--9, 1990 episode.
