In response to the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, an ozone air quality modeling analysis is required to be performed for the Atlanta serious nonattainment area. In 1993 the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (GEPD), Air Protection Branch asked EPA for permission to apply an updated version of the Urban Airshed Model (UAM), known as UAM-V, for use in developing Atlanta`s State Implementation Plan (SIP) for ozone. Before granting approval, the EPA required GEPD to perform a comparison application of UAM-V with the current regulatory version of the model (UAM-IV) to determine if UAM-V performs as well as or better than UAM-IV. This paper summarizes the application, model performance evaluation, and comparison of UAM-IV and UAM-V for three historical ozone episodes.
