Title: POLARIZATION OF NEUTRONS FROM THE REACTIONS Li$sup 7$(p,n)Be$sup 7$ AND D(d,n)He$sup 3$ (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4224757

The degree of polarization of neutrons was measured for the Li/sup 7/ (p,n) reaction at a laboratory angle of 50 deg for proton energies from 3.0 to 6.0 Mev and for the D(d,n) reaction at a laboratory angle of 404DE for deuteron energries from 2.0 to 4.5 Mev. Liquid helium contained in a thin-walled dewar was used as a polarization analyzer. A millimicrosecond time-of-flight system was used as a neutron spectrometer. For the Li/sup 7/(p,n) reaction the polarization is approximately +0.35 in the proton energy region from 3.0 to 4.0 Mev and at E/sub p/ = 5.8 Mev it is -0.30. The polarization is zero at E/sub p/ = 5.1 Mev. Below 4 Mev only neutrons going to the ground state of Be/sup 7/ were counted, but for higher proton energies the measured polarization is the net value for the ground and first excited states combined. The (negative) polarization in the D(d,n) reaction has a maximum value of 0.21 at around E/sub d/ = 2.0 Mev, decreasing slowly 10 approxi-mately 0.15 at E/sub d/ = 4.5 Mev. (auth)
