ADMINISTRATION OF PERIPHERAL NEUROTROPHIC AGENTS IN THE PROPHYLAXIS OF RADIATION SICKNESS

Journal Article · · Folia Biologica (Prague) (Czechoslovakia)
OSTI ID:4223651
Experiments were carried out in 5,582 mice irradiated with a total-body dose of 700 r, and the prophylactic effect of pharmacological substances chiefiy affecting the peripheral parts of the nervous system was studied. Among these compounds, the stimulators had a protective effect, while paralyzing or blocking agents were usually ineffective. The best protective effect was provided by a combination of the two peripheral stimulators adrenaline and acetylcholihe (survival 36%). The protective effect of this combination is associated with the peripheral sympathicotropic action of adrenaline and the mainly M-cholinergic effect of acetylcholine. These substances evidently act via intermediary metabolic products, which can themselves be used as protective anti-radiation agents. (auth)
