Reactions F/sup 19/(n,d)O/sup 18/ and P/sup 31/(n,d)Si/sup 30/ with 14.1 Mev neutrons were studied with neutrons from T(d n)He/sup 4/ reactions at 260 kev. The neutron f ux of 5 x 10/sup 9/ neutrons/4 ith Cr deposite was monitored with a proportional counter filled with BF/sub 3/; absolate measurements were made by recording alpha particles, with a CsI(Tl) crystal counter. The deuteron energy spectra and angular distribution at = O was correlated with the energy of recoil deuterons from a zirconium deuteride target. The magnitude -5.9 cores consistin 0.3 Mev was obtained for the Q. The angular distribution of deuterons corresponding to the transition to the 0/sup 18/ nucleus ground state was plotted according to previously published data for r/sub o/ = 5 x 10/sup -13/ cm and 1 = 0. The energy and angular distributions of deuterons from the P/sup 31/ (n,d)Si/ sup 30/ reactions were plotted and Q for the transition to the ground state is - 5.2 cores consistin 0.2 Mev. The transition to the Si/sup 30/ ground state corresponds to 1 = 0. P/sup 31/ has spin 1/2+ and Si/sup 30/ has spin 0/sup +/, consequently only s-wave pick-up shows in the reaction. The angular distribution is in good agreement with Butler's theory. The width of the /sup 2/ transition to the Si/sup 30/ ground state is 0.054. The similarity between the reaction F/sup 19/(n,d)O/sup 18/ and P (n,d)Si/sup 30/ is stressed. (R.V.J.)
