MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF RARE EARTH IONS IN GARNETS

The magnetic properties of isostructural Yb/sub 3/Ga/sub 5/O/sub 12/, Yb/ sub 3/Fe/sub 5/O/sub 12/, and Y/sub 3/Fe/sub 5/O/sub 12/, with small impuriti es of rare earths, are discussed on the basis of implications from paramagnetic resonance studies of Yb/sup 3+/ ions in yttrium gallium garnet The susceptibility and saturation magnetization to be expected may be calculated from the measured g- values Equations for the determination of the saturation magnetic moment and the anisotropy energy were derived. It was assumed that crystal field splittings were large compared with exchange effects and that each rare earth ion was in a doublet ground state. (B.O.G.)
