TWINNING, SLIP AND CLEAVAGE IN U$sub 3$$O$$sub 8$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4836652
Data on the crystallography of twinning, slip, and cleavage in U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ are reported. Twinning occurs on (110) and (130) composition planes and the twinning elements are tabulated. The slip plane is (100) and the slip direction <032>. Cleavage occurs primarily on (120), with secondary cleavage in twinned crystals on twinning composition planes and (100). (auth) The magnetic properties of rare earth ions in crystals with the garnet structure are considered. Methods of preparing suitable samples are described, and results of lowtemperature microwave resonance experiments with Yb/sup 3+/, Dy/sup 3+/, Er/ sup 3+/, and Nd/sup 3+/ ions are given. For each of these ions, the ground state is a doublet that can be characterized by three principal values of a g tensor; and with one exception, all the principal values are determined for these ions in both yttrium aluminum and yttrium gallium garnets. The two sets of results show that the local environment of the rare-earth ions is far from being spherically or cubically symmetrical, so that the individual rare earth ions have very anisotropic magnetic properties. The relation of these results to the observed anisotropies in rare earth iron garnets and rare-earth-doped yttrium iron garnet is discussed. (auth)
