OBSERVATION OF He$sup 4$ HYPERFRAGMENTS FROM K$sup -$-He INTERACTIONS: THE K$sup -$$-$$lambda$ RELATIVE PARITY

The Duke University helium bubble chamber was exposed to a separated low- energy K/sup -/ beam. Approximately 2500 K/sup -/ interactions at rest were obtained. In a partial scan, evidence was found for the production of Hel hyperfragments in the reaction K/sup -/ + He/sup 4/ sintered BeO /sub /sub 2/ at 1880 /He/sup 4/ + ith Cr deposite /sup -/. The relative K/sup -/- /sub 2/ at 1880 parity can be inferred from the reaction if it is assumed that parity is conserved, the spins of K/sup -/ and /sub /sub 2/ at 1880 /He/sup 4/ are zero, and no bound excited states of /sub /sub 2/ at 1880 /He/sup 4/ exist. The K/sup -/- /sub 2/ at 1880 relative parity was established to be negative. (W.D.M.)
