AN IN-PILE STUDY OF ORGANICS AS NUCLEAR REACTOR COOLANTS

Journal Article · · Chem. Eng. Progr.
OSTI ID:4208159

A preliminary engineering study to determine the feasibility of using organic chemicals as nuclear reactor coolant-moderators was made for biphenyl; the tertiary eutectic mixture of biphenyl, o-terphenyl and m-terphenyl HB-40, a partially hydrogenated mixture of the terphenyl isomers; and monoisopropylbiphenyl. A test loop was designed and operated to determine ior these organics the specific radiolytic-decomposition rate, gas-generation rate, induced-radioactivity levels, and effect of decomposition products on the operating characteristics ot the system and on the engineering properties of each material.
