Waertsilae Diesel, together with Metra Engineering, is offering engines for a totally new application area, compressor stations for natural gas pipelines. The two companies have developed two versions of gas-diesel compressor (GDC) stations for natural gas pipelines. One version is for gas distribution systems, which are characterized by highly varying gas pressures. The other is for gas transmission systems, which are characterized by normally high volumes at a relatively low and constant pressure. The GDC station for distribution purposes is based on the Waertsilae Vasa 18V32GD engine, while the GDC station for transmission is based on the Waretsilae Vasa 18V46GD engine. Both use a conventional configuration comprising three gas-diesel engine compressor sets, with two units operating and one available as a stand-by. 2 figs., 1 tab.
