THERMAL NEUTRON FLUXES IN HRE-2 DETERMINED FROM ZIRCALOY-2 INDUCED ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS, RUNS 16 AND 17

Thermal neutron fluxes prevailing near some Zircaloy-2 specimens exposed during HRT run 17 and near others exposed during runns 17, 16, 14, and 13 were determined from measurements of the induced activity in the specimens. The neutron fluxes were calculated for an average core power level of 1 Mw. Flux values of 5.3 to 3.8 x 10/sup 13/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/ sec were obtained for core screen specimens located 1O.9 to 16.8 inches, respectively, below the core center. Values of 1.4 to 1.6 x l0/sup 13/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/ sec were obtained for four specimens located in the reactor blanket region about 21 inches from the core center, and flux values for specimens from the core exit region, located about 34 to 53 inches from the core center, were calculated to have ranged from 6.2 x 10/ sup 11/ to 4.8 x 10/sup 10/ neutrons/cm sec.
