THE SYSTEM LITHIUM HYDRIDE-CALCIUM HYDRIDE

The solid-liquid equilibrium diagram of the system lithium hydride-- calcium hydride was investigated by thermal analysis from 0 to 37.2 mole % CaH/ sub 2. The system showed a eutectic at 18.3 plus or minus 0.5 mole% CaH/sub 2/ and 614 deg C. From behavior of time of eutectic halt as a function of composition, solid solubility of CaH/sub 2/ in LiH at the eutectic temperature was indicated as 0.4 plus or minus 0.4 mole% CaH/sub 2/. Solution energy calculations indicate the possibility of such solid solubility, rather high in view of the large ionic size of Ca/sup 2+/ as compared with Li/sup +/ However, limitations in the apparatus and approximations in the calculations are such that the significance of this solubility value cannot be decided on the basis of the current work alone.
