COMPARISON OF MONTE CARLO CALCULATION AND EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS FOR GAMMA-RAY AIR SCATTERING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4200682
Convair has reported an experimental determination of the angular distribution and energy spectrum of air scattered gamma-rays from a cobalt-60 source. Lynch, et. al., reported the results of a Monte Carlo study of gamma-ray air scattering from a monoenergetic beam source which was performed at WADC on the Remington Rand 1103 digital computer. This program was modified to perform similar calculations for a monoenergetic, point isotropic source. The code was further modified to print separately photon currents due to first collisions, to second collisions, to third colllsions, and to all higher order collisions. The angular distribution and energy spectra as reported by Convair are compared with the results of Lynch, et. al., and with results obtained with the modified program. In general, the agreement between theory and experiment is within a factor of two. (auth)
