Silica gels were used for separating uranium from Zr/sup 95/ and Nb/sup 95/ and mixtures of their fragments. The equilibrium and adsorptive characteristics of the process and the adsorptive index taken under dynamic conditions are tabulated. The investigation of selective zirconium and niobium adsorption showed high adsorptive selectivity for niobium regardless of the content of nitric acid in the solution. The maximum zirconium adsorption was established at 0.5 to 1.0 N of HNO/sub 3/. The sorption of zirconium from 10 N HNO/sub 3/ is very weak while that of niobium is quite strong. Both zirconium and niobium are well adsorbed in weak acid solutions under dynamic conditions and poorly adsorbed under static conditions. Zirconium-niobium complex formation lowers their selective adsorption. Satisfactory desorption of zirconium and niobium by oxalic acid was achieved. (R.V.J.)
