ANTIHYPERON PRODUCTION IN ANTINUCLEON-NUCLEON COLLISIONS NEAR THRESHOLD
The possibility of hyperon-antihyperon pair production in nucleon- antinucleon collisions is studied theoretically using the T matrix of nucleon- antinucleon interactions, neglecting electromagnetic interactions and meson (K) production. The numerical data for the computation of the cross sections of production are tabulated for the hyperon pairs LAMBDA -bar LAMBDA , LAMBDA - bar SIGMA , SIGMA -bar LAMBDA , SIGMA SIGMA -bar,and XI -bar XI . The cross section of LAMBDA -bar LAMBDA production is computed to be ca. 48 mb, which is in good agreement with the value of 50 mb reported for seven observed LAMBDA - bar LAMBDA events. The cross sections for the other hyperon pairs are nearly zero. (D.L.C.)
