Hyperon- and antihyperon-nucleon scattering at lear

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7080096

We have proposed to study at LEAR the production of hyperon-antihyperon pairs i.e. the two-body processes: anti pp- ..-->.. anti YY-, where Y:..lambda..,..sigma.., near threshold. Within the momentum range of LEAR the following pair creations are possible: anti..lambda lambda..-, ..lambda sigma../sub 0/ + c.c., anti ..sigma../sup +/..sigma../sup +/, anti ..sigma../sup 0/..sigma../sup 0/ and anti ..sigma../sup -/..sigma../sup -/. As an example the momentum interval of the anti ..lambda lambda..-pair at the maximum anti p-momentum of 2 GeV/c covers the range 0.4 < p/sub ..lambda.., anti ..lambda..) < 1.6 GeV/c. The yield at the rate of 10/sup 6/ anti p/s and a production target of 2.5 mm CH/sub 2/ amounts to about 2.10/sup 5/ anti ..lambda lambda..-pairs per day, 5.10/sup 4/ of these yielding 4 charged decay particles. This rate is sufficiently large to make detailed studies of hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-nuclei interactions feasible. This information is of vital importance for our understanding of the strong interaction.
