Magnetoelastic coupling in paramagnetic dysprosium

The dependence of the elastic constants c$sub 11$ and c$sub 33$ on temperature and applied magnetic field was measured for single-crystal paramagnetic dysprosium, in an effort to determine the magnetoelastic coupling constants. Magnetostrictive corrections were made. The magnetoelastic coupling constants, following the theory of Southern and Goodings, are considerably larger then expected; those estimated from the static magnetostriction results of Clark et al. are smaller by a factor of about 20. A possible reason for this large difference between the statically and dynamically determined values for the magnetoelastic coupling constants may lie in the assumption by Southern and Goodings that the principal magnetoelastic contribution to the elastic constants arises from the inclusion of the nonlinear terms in the conventional definition of the finite strain tensor in the lowest order terms of the magnetoelastic Hamiltonian.
