DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRA REFRACTORY MATERIALS. Progress Report No. 17 for February 1 through April 30, 1959

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4196191

The principal objective of this work is to secure basic information on refractory systems from which map be developed materials suitable for use in air at temperature in excess of 1910 deg C for periods up to one hour. Development of equipment including a furnace which moduli of rupture can be measured, inert atmosphere dilatometer, pressurized furnace, and oxidation furnace is described. Preparation, oxidation testing, and thermal shock testing of specimens are discussed. Materials investigated include ZrB/sub 2/ - Zr/sub 5/Si/sub 3/, ZrSiO/ sub 4/ ZrB/sub 2/, ZrB/sub 2/ - MoSi/sub 2/, and ZrB/sub 2/ - WSi/sub 2/. (See also AD
