DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRA REFRACTORY MATERIALS. Progress Report No. 18 for May 1 through July 31, 1959

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4174414

A furnace in which moduli of rupture can be measured at temperatures near 3630 deg F in an inert atmosphere was designed and constructed. A dilatometer for measuring thermal expansion coefficients in protective atmospheres was assembled. The physical properties and oxidation resistance of ZrB/sub 2/-MoSi/sub 2/ are being determined. In an attempt to increase melting temperature of the ZrB/sub 2/-MoSi/sub 2/ bodies, varying amounts of TaSi/sub 2/ were incorporated as a solid solution with MoSi/sub 2/. (W.L.H.)
