THE EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAMS OF ZIRCONIUM OXIDERARE EARTH OXIDES (in French)
The systems ZrO/sub 2/-La/sub 2/O/sub 3/, ZrO/sub 2/-Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, ZrO/s ub 2/-Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and ZrO/sub 2/-Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were studied. The results showed the stability of solid solutions of trivalent oxide in quadratic zirconium oxide. Some remarkable properties of these phases were studied. The existence of two types of cubic phases was shown. One phase is a non-stoichiometric compound of the pyrochlore type which appears in all the systems studied in the vicinity of the 2ZrO/sub 2/-M/sub 2/O/sub 3/ composition. The extent of its region of homogeneity was determined at different temperatures. The second phase is a cubic solid solution of the fluorine type which appears in the equilibrium diagram on both sides of the pyrochlore phase. The extent of its region of homogeneity and its stability depends greatly on the nature of the trivalent oxide. For example, the region of homogeneity of the solid cubic solution ZrC/sub 2/-La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ has a eutectoid point. The solid cubic solution ZrO/sub 2/-Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, however, is stable up to room temperature. These results permitted the equilibrium diagrams of zirconium oxide-rare earth oxide systems to be defined. (tr-auth)
