ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION AND LINEAR POLARIZATION OF GAMMA RAYS FROM ALIGNED $sup 166$mHo NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Physica
Measurements of the arisotropies and the linear polarization of gamma - radiations from Ho/sup 166m/ oriented in Nd-ethyl-sulphate are reported and discussed. The measurements give information about the multipole order of the gamma -rays, the mixing ratio of two multipoles and the electric or magnetic character of the radiations. The 817 and 706 kev gamma -rays are found to be nearly pure E2 and E1 radiations and the spins and parities of their initial levels (973 and 1790 kev) are 5- and 6-. The 1256 kev level has probably spin and parity 5-. The life constant A/k and the magnetic moment mu of Ho/sup 166m/ are 0.27 plus or minus 0.03 deg K and 3.2 plus or minus 0.5 nm if the spin I/ sub 0/ of Ho/sup 166m/ is 6. With I/sub 0/ = 7 or I/sub 0/ = 8 the values are 0.24 plus or minus 0.02 deg K and 3.3 plus or minus 0.5 nm or 0.22 plus or minus 0.02 deg K and 3.5 plus or minus 0.5 nm respectively. (auth)
