THE MEASUREMENT OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENTAL GAMMA RADIATION (in German)

The natural radioactive content of the body, cosmic radiation, and environmental gamma radiation contribute to the natural radiation load of humans. Geiger-Muller counters, high pressure ionization chambers and dose films packed with scintillator foils have been used to measure the environmental gamma radiation, for which mainly the members of the urarium and thorium series and potassium-40 are responsible. The most exact performance was that of the high pressure chamber with which the other instruments have been calibrated. Necessary corrections being applied, the measurements agreed upon 80 to 90 mrad/a for the environmental gamma radiation in a Leeds laboratory. In different pants of Britain values between 21 and 100 mrad/a have been obtained. (auth)
