The adsorption of Am by quartz glass was studied as a function of pH. The maximum adsorption from nitric acid solutions with americium concentration 10/ sup -9/ M is found at pH 6.5 to 7.0. Microquantities of colloidal americiuin were deterroined by ultrafiltration. The adsorption, desorption, and ultrafiltration data indicate predominantly ion dispersion americium in solutions with pH 1 to 4.5. An increase of pH tends to enhance hydrolysis, and with pH> 7 leads to colloidal particle formation. (R.V.J.)
