Adsorption of protactinium on quartz from nitric acid solutions in the pH range 1 to 14 showed that maximum adsorption occurs at pH = 5 to 5.2. The adsorption and desorption curves for aqueous solutions indicate that ionic forms of protactinium predominate at low pH (below 4 to 4.5) and colloidal forms at pH 7.5. The solubility product of Pa(OH)/sub 5/ is 10/sup -55/ at a protactinium concentration of 10/sup -12/ moles/1. (R.V.J.)
