FLAVIANIC ACID AS A NEW SPECIFIC REAGENT FOR ZIRCONIUM
It was found that fiavianic acid (1-hydroxy-2, 4-dinitro7- naphthylenesulfonic acid) (I) forms a yellow precipitate with Cr(IV) which is insoluble in water and in acids and is suitable for the gravimetric determination of Zr. No other ions form precipitates with I in acid medium. HF, H/sub 2/SO/ sub 4/, citric, and tartaric acids mask Zr(IV) and interfere with its precipitation by 1. In the graviretric determination of Zr the solution to be analyzed (0.02 to 0.07 g Zr) is diluted with water to 80 to 100 W, 5 ml of conc HCl are added, and conc I solution is added until the precipitation of Zr is complete, ofter which the solution is heated to boiling. The resulting precipitate is filtered through a blue ribbon filter STAsic!, washed with hot 0.2% solution of I, ignited, and weighed as ZrO/sub 2/. In order to avoid losses during ignition, the filter with the precipitate is wetted with H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. The error of the determination is 0.1 to 0.2%.
