GRAVIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM (AND THORIUM) USING N-PHENYLGLYCINE, SUCCINIC ACID, AND ADIPIC ACID
Succinic and adipic acids are reponted to completely precipitate Th; it has now been found that N-phenylglycine completely precipitates Zr and Th in the pH range 2.03.8 and 3.8-4.0, respectively. Malonic acid precipitates Zr incompletely, while succinic and adipic acids bring about its complete precipitation in the pH range 3.0-3.5 and 2.0-3.5, respectively. N- phenylglycine, which was prepared from chloracetic acid and aniline, in 0.5- 1 g amounts was added to 100-150 ml of a solution containing approximates 10 mg of ThO/sub 2/ or ZrO/sub 2/ and the pH of the solution adjusted with the addition of hydrochloric acid or ammonia. The solution was boiled for 1-2 min, cooled to room temperature, and then filtered through Whatman filter paper No. 40. The precipitate was washed with a l% aqueous solution of N-phenylglycine (adjusted to the same pH as the experimental solution), dried, and ignited to give the oxide. ZrO/sub 2/ and ThO/sub 2/ were then determined gravimetrically, and the results compared with those obtained using the oxine method. Also presented is a technique for the gravimetric determination of Zr using malonic, succinic and adipic acids. The procedure is similar to that described above. (BBB)
