Alumina and magnesia specimens were hot pressed for use in studies of grain growth as a function of time, temperature, and pressure. It was found that coramercial aluminas can be hot pressed to 96% of theoretical density with a grain growth factor of 1.5. Other cominercial aluminas were difficult to polish, and improved polishing techniques are indicated. Preliminary studies on magnesia indicate that dense specimens can be obtained by hot preseing at 1650 deg C and 3000 psi. Specimens of magnesia pressed to 99% of theoretical density in 8.5 minutes bad a grain growth factor of about 12 to 14. (J.R.D.)
